Proposed 2021-22 Calendar Adjustments go to School Board Dec. 16

Proposed 2021-22 Calendar Adjustments go to School Board Dec. 16

South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo Schools) will propose adjustments to the 2021–22 school calendar during the school board business meeting on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Like many school districts, SoWashCo Schools seeks to adjust its current calendar to help address a combination of challenges related to the ongoing pandemic. The changes to the remainder of the school year will provide flexible learning days for students in grades 6-12 and a staff preparation day on Jan. 3 designated as a day without school (K-12).

The proposed calendar adjustments include:

  • Jan. 3, 2022 - No School (K-12) Staff Preparation Day
  • Jan. 14, 2022 - Flexible Learning Day (6-12)
  • Feb. 4, 2022 - Flexible Learning Day (6-12)
  • Feb. 22, 2022 - Flexible Learning Day (6-12); (K-5 is already scheduled as a No School Day for staff preparation)
  • April 1, 2022 - Flexible Learning Day (6-12)
  • May 13, 2022 - Flexible Learning Day (6-12)

The proposed staff preparation day would give staff an opportunity to connect with colleagues and plan for the weeks following winter break. More than ever, teachers are working to effectively respond to the social, emotional, behavior and academic needs of each student.

Flexible Learning Day Schedules (6-12)

On flexible learning days, students will learn from home and connect and interact with their teacher and classmates. Students will focus on practicing and reviewing previous lessons with opportunities for individual or small group academic support with their teacher(s).

Flexible learning day schedules include live video conferences, activities for students to do on their own, windows of time for meal pick up at select school sites and teacher office hours where students will receive individual or small group support. Students must log in and participate or they will be marked absent. View the general school schedules for middle and high school flexible learning days below.

Last month, South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo Schools) conducted a survey of families, staff and students (grades 6-12) about their ideal school-year calendar. The input gathered was intended to inform future calendars starting with 2022-23. The feedback, especially from students and staff, pointed to adjustments that needed to be taken this school year.

We understand that these changes may affect family schedules and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your support as we work to balance the many demands placed on our students, our staff and our schools.

If approved by the school board on Thursday, Dec. 16, calendars will be updated at
